Cutting-Edge Mask Uses Breath To Detect Health Issues
Researchers have developed a “smart mask” that can monitor a person’s health by analyzing their breath, offering a new way to track conditions like respiratory diseases and kidney disorders. Published in the journal Science, the study highlights the potential of this mask, which is equipped with biosensors and can be produced for as little as $1.
The mask works by capturing aerosol droplets exhaled by the wearer, which contain gases and other substances that can serve as markers for various diseases. This data is then transmitted wirelessly to devices like smartphones or computers, allowing for real-time health monitoring. The research team at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) demonstrated the mask’s ability to detect inflammation markers in people with asthma or COPD, as well as measure blood alcohol levels and ammonia gas, which is associated with kidney disease.
These initial studies are considered proof of concept, showing that the smart mask could be expanded to detect a broader range of health indicators. The mask is designed to be comfortable and practical for daily use, even for those with existing respiratory conditions.
