Doctor Backs 7 Liver-Loving Drinks
Protecting your liver requires avoiding more than just alcohol. Sugary sodas, fruit juices, and artificially sweetened drinks are also harmful, as their high fructose content can contribute to fat accumulation in the abdomen and elevate the risk of fatty liver disease. Fortunately, according to gastroenterologist Dr. Joseph Salhab, there are several beverages that may actually support liver health.
Chia seed water, a trending health drink, has gained approval from many medical professionals. Dr. Salhab highlights its rich magnesium and fiber content, which can aid those with metabolic liver issues. When soaked, chia seeds swell and form a gel that may help remove toxins linked to inflammation. Enhancing the drink with cucumber and lemon—creating a “chia fresca”—adds hydration and boosts antioxidant support through vitamin C.
Kefir, a fermented dairy drink similar to yogurt, is another liver-friendly option. Its high probiotic count can improve gut health, which plays a role in reducing liver inflammation. Adding berries to kefir provides antioxidants, especially anthocyanins, which are associated with lower oxidative stress in the liver. Pomegranates are another good choice; they’re low in fructose and full of polyphenols that may help regulate lipid metabolism.
Ginger also makes the list due to its well-documented anti-inflammatory effects, including potential benefits for individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Coffee, widely studied for its liver-protective effects, may reduce the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer. Dr. Salhab suggests enhancing coffee with cacao, a source of flavanols like epicatechin, known for supporting blood flow and reducing inflammation.
Additional drinks like watermelon juice and teas also offer benefits. Watermelon provides hydration and citrulline, which supports nitric oxide production and improves blood flow to vital organs. Green tea, rich in catechins such as EGCG, has been linked to decreased liver fat, while black tea contains theaflavins with fat-burning and glucose-regulating properties. For extra flavor and liver support, Salhab recommends adding mint, which contributes beneficial plant compounds known as phenolics.
