The sweet treat has turned scary.
Wells Enterprises, the company behind popular ice cream brands like Blue Bunny and Halo Top, has issued a voluntary recall of nearly 18,000 containers of its ice cream and frozen yogurt products. The recall comes after concerns that some batches may be contaminated with pieces of plastic, posing a potential health risk to consumers.
The recall was initiated on April 25 and was recently made public through a report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The affected products include 22 different flavors, all sold in large 3-gallon tubs primarily intended for commercial use. These tubs were distributed to over 100 distribution centers across various states, including Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, and Texas.
According to the FDA, the recalled items carry “use by” dates ranging from March 2026 through October 2026. The agency classified the recall as a Class II, meaning the consumption of the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health issues. While the health consequences are not expected to be life-threatening, the potential for injury remains significant enough to warrant the recall.
Wells Enterprises has not reported any injuries or illnesses related to the contamination so far. The company is working closely with the FDA and distribution centers to remove the affected products from circulation. Consumers and businesses that have purchased the recalled items are advised to check the product codes and discard or return the tubs if they match the recall criteria.
