Experts have recently provided updated guidance on the best drinks for children and adolescents aged 5 to 18, with the top options being plain cow’s milk, water, and limited amounts of vegetable juice. These recommendations are intended to help parents and caregivers make healthier beverage choices that support the overall well-being of young people.
The recommendations were developed by an expert panel from Healthy Eating Research, which included representatives from prominent health organizations such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Heart Association. Following a five-month review of scientific data, the group highlighted the importance of water as the primary hydration source for children, with daily intake varying based on age and gender.
Tap water was particularly recommended for its affordability, environmental advantages, and fluoride content, which helps prevent cavities. Alongside water, plain pasteurized milk—preferably low-fat or fat-free—was advised due to its nutritional benefits. While 100% fruit or vegetable juice can be included in a child’s diet, it should be consumed sparingly due to its high calorie content.
The panel discouraged the use of plant-based milks, like almond or oat milk, unless medically necessary, as these alternatives do not provide the same nutrients as dairy milk. Additionally, flavored and sweetened milks should be limited. Sugary beverages such as sodas and sports drinks were strongly discouraged, as they are not part of a healthy diet for children and teens.
Caffeinated drinks were also not recommended, as they can interfere with sleep, mental health, and heart health. Amy Reed, a pediatric dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, stressed that making informed choices about beverages for children is just as important as selecting nutritious foods.
