The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to Dollar Tree after discovering that the discount retailer failed to promptly remove lead-tainted WanaBana apple puree products from its stores following a recall. The recall was initiated in October 2023 due to concerns about lead and chromium contamination in the fruit pouches, which can pose serious health risks, especially to children.
Despite being notified of the recall, Dollar Tree continued to stock WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree pouches in several states until late December, well after the recall was announced. The FDA criticized Dollar Tree for ineffective measures, noting instances where children consumed the recalled product in stores before sales were refused at registers.
Lead exposure at the levels found in these pouches can lead to acute toxicity, particularly harmful to children due to their vulnerability. The FDA emphasized that lead is toxic and can cause severe health issues regardless of age or health status, including neurological and developmental problems.
In response to the FDA’s warning, Dollar Tree acknowledged the issue and stated that new management is implementing measures to improve recall execution processes. The company operates a vast network of discount stores across the United States and assured the public of its commitment to addressing the situation.
The CDC reported cases of elevated blood lead levels in children from 44 states who consumed the recalled pouches. Although the outbreak was declared over in April, the FDA continues to advise consumers to discard any remaining pouches due to their long shelf life.
Anyone who consumed the recalled WanaBana apple puree products is advised to consult a healthcare provider, as there is no safe level of lead exposure. Short-term effects of lead poisoning include headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, and anemia, while long-term exposure can lead to more serious health complications.
The FDA cautioned the public about the potential presence of these recalled pouches in households and reiterated the importance of safely disposing of them to prevent further health risks.
