A recent study involving lab rats suggests that the Mediterranean diet, known for its heart health benefits and weight loss potential, may also boost brain function. Researchers observed that rats on a Mediterranean diet showed improvements in cognitive performance, particularly in memory and learning. The diet, which includes olive oil, fish, and fiber, was linked to positive changes in gut bacteria, which in turn, improved brain health.
The study, published in Gut Microbes Reports, involved feeding rats a Mediterranean diet for 14 weeks. The rats demonstrated significant increases in four types of beneficial gut bacteria compared to a control group that ate a Western-style diet rich in saturated fats. These changes in gut microbiota were associated with enhanced performance in tasks designed to test memory and learning, such as maze challenges.
In addition to better memory, the Mediterranean diet group also exhibited greater cognitive flexibility, meaning they were better able to adapt to new information. They also showed improved short-term memory. The findings indicate that younger individuals, especially teenagers and young adults, could see cognitive benefits from adopting the Mediterranean diet.
The researchers, including Dr. Demetrius Maraganore from Tulane University, believe that the Mediterranean diet’s effects could be useful for improving academic performance in adolescents or work performance in young adults. Although the study was conducted on rats, the results mirror previous human studies that have shown the Mediterranean diet is linked to better memory and a reduced risk of dementia.
The researchers suggest that those looking to follow the Mediterranean diet should focus on using olive oil as their main fat source, consuming a variety of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and opting for fish and lean proteins instead of processed meats. Additionally, they recommend including a high amount of fiber from plant-based foods in one’s daily diet.
