It’s adding years to your life.
New research published in the European Heart Journal suggests that the timing of coffee consumption might play a significant role in determining its health benefits, including longevity and heart health. The study found that individuals who drank coffee only in the morning had a 16% lower risk of premature death and a 31% reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease when compared to those who did not drink coffee at all.
This research, led by Dr. Lu Qi from Tulane University, is the first to specifically examine the timing of coffee intake and its effects on health outcomes. While much dietary guidance focuses on the quantity and type of food, Dr. Qi believes that future recommendations could include timing as a crucial factor in promoting better health.
The study analyzed data from over 40,000 adults aged 18 and older, looking at coffee consumption across three periods: morning, afternoon, and evening. It revealed that drinking coffee only in the morning had the most significant health benefits, particularly in terms of heart health and longevity. In contrast, those who consumed coffee throughout the day did not experience similar benefits.
The researchers believe that the timing of coffee intake may influence circadian rhythms and hormone production, particularly melatonin, which plays a key role in regulating sleep and overall health. Drinking coffee later in the day may interfere with melatonin levels, potentially affecting sleep patterns and heart health. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory properties of coffee might be more effective when consumed in the morning, as certain inflammatory markers in the body peak during this time.
Although the study provides valuable insights, it is observational, meaning it cannot definitively prove a cause-and-effect relationship. Experts caution that more research is needed to understand the exact mechanisms at play, but the findings suggest that when coffee is consumed may be as important as how much is consumed for overall health.
