There’s a bacterial outbreak.
Hormel, the company behind Planters peanut products, has launched a recall due to concerns over potential Listeria contamination in items sold at select Publix and Dollar Tree stores across five states.
The affected products include Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts in 4-ounce packaging and Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts in 8.75-ounce packaging. Thankfully, there have been no reported illnesses linked to these recalled items thus far.
The recall encompasses products distributed to Publix distribution centers in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina, as well as Dollar Tree distribution centers in South Carolina and Georgia. Consumers in these states are urged to inspect the packaging for specific UPC codes and “Best if Used By” dates to determine if they possess the affected products.
For the 4-ounce Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts, consumers should search for UPC code 2900002097 and a “Best if Used By” date of 04 11 25. The recalled 8.75-ounce Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts feature a UPC code of 2900001621 and a “Best if Used By” date of 05APR26.
Importantly, this recall only impacts the specified sizes, varieties, and packaging formats of Planters brand products. Consumers who have purchased the recalled items are advised to either discard them or return them to the store for a complete refund or exchange.
Listeria monocytogenes, the concerning bacteria, presents a notable risk of foodborne illness, particularly for pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with compromised immune systems. Common symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, typically manifesting within two weeks of consuming contaminated food. It’s essential for consumers to stay attentive and take necessary measures to uphold food safety standards.
