Asthma Risk Soars For People Living With This Health Condition
A recent review has found that individuals with type 2 diabetes are nearly twice as likely to develop asthma. Specifically, those with type 2 diabetes are 83% more prone to asthma compared to individuals without diabetes. Conversely, asthma sufferers have a 28% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Nam Nguyen from Taipei Medical University, who led the study, emphasized the importance of heightened awareness for both patients and healthcare providers regarding this connection. The research, which analyzed data from 17 million people across 14 studies, indicates that the risk of type 2 diabetes increases with the severity of asthma.
The study suggests that there may be shared underlying factors or common causes between asthma and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Nguyen advocates for further research to explore these potential links more thoroughly.
The study was presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes annual meeting in Madrid, and the findings should be considered preliminary until they are published in a peer-reviewed journal. Dr. Nguyen also recommended preventive measures, such as screening for pre-diabetes in asthma patients and managing systemic corticosteroid use, to help mitigate the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
