Dementia is a growing concern in the United States, with numbers expected to rise unless significant advances in diagnosis and treatment are made. In response, researchers are exploring various methods to improve cognitive health, including the potential benefits of matcha green tea.
A recent study conducted in Japan investigated whether matcha green tea could enhance cognitive functions. While the results did not show improvements in general memory or broader cognitive abilities, they did reveal benefits for older adults with mild cognitive decline. Participants consuming matcha exhibited better social cognition and sleep quality.
Matcha green tea is rich in vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds such as theanine and catechins. Theanine is known for its calming effects, while catechins can help reduce inflammation and protect cells. Researchers tested 99 participants aged 60 to 85 over a year, comparing those who took matcha capsules with a placebo group. The matcha capsules contained catechins, theanine, and caffeine, but despite high adherence rates and increased theanine levels in the matcha group, no overall improvements in cognitive function were observed.
Nevertheless, the matcha group showed notable enhancements in social cognition, such as improved ability to recognize facial expressions and understand language, as well as better sleep quality. These findings suggest that matcha might be beneficial for sleep and social interaction, which are crucial for mental and physical health in older adults. Experts recommend further studies to understand how matcha affects specific cognitive domains and to confirm its potential benefits.
