This drink stands out for its simplicity and lower calorie count compared to other alcoholic beverages. According to nutritionist Sophie Trotman, a gin and tonic made with light tonic contains the fewest calories and sugar. It’s important to avoid diet tonic, which often contains artificial sweeteners that can have negative long-term health effects.
Switching from regular tonic to a light version can reduce the calorie count to under 100 when paired with a standard 1.5-ounce shot of gin. For comparison, a glass of red or white wine contains about 130 calories, while a can of beer has around 200 calories. Additionally, wines can be high in sugar and sulfates, which may irritate the digestive system, and beers, being carbohydrate-heavy, can lead to blood sugar spikes.
Despite the benefits of choosing lighter options like gin and tonic, abstaining from alcohol remains the healthiest choice. However, some research has pointed to potential benefits of gin, particularly the juniper berries used in its production. Studies suggest these berries could aid digestion and are rich in antioxidants that have been used in traditional medicine, potentially promoting longevity.
If gin isn’t your preferred drink, there are still healthier alternatives. Madelyn Fernstrom, PhD, recommends mixing wine with club soda to create a spritzer, which reduces the calorie count and helps slow down the pace of drinking. Other options include mixing sparkling wine with orange juice to make a low-calorie mimosa or choosing soda water as a mixer for your favorite spirit.
While making healthier choices in alcoholic drinks is a good step, moderation is key. Trotman advises alternating alcoholic drinks with water to stay hydrated and to reduce the impact of alcohol. Ultimately, the best option for your health is to either avoid alcohol or reduce your consumption to a minimum.
