Surgeon General Issues New Public Health Emergency
According to a recent survey, nearly half of American parents report experiencing “overwhelming” stress daily, prompting U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy to issue a new advisory on the issue. Murthy emphasized that parental stress is a significant public health concern and called for greater attention to the factors affecting parents’ mental health and its impact on their children’s well-being.
The advisory highlights that in 2023, about one-third of parents reported high stress levels in the past month, compared to 20% of other adults. Additionally, nearly 48% of parents indicated that their stress was overwhelming on most days, a stark contrast to the 26% of other adults who felt the same way.
Key stressors affecting parents include financial difficulties, economic instability, time constraints, concerns about their children’s health and safety, isolation, and the pressures of technology and social media. Murthy noted that these stressors not only affect parents but also have a detrimental effect on their children, exacerbating mental health challenges.
In his advisory, Murthy reflected on the increasing challenges of parenting amid rapid societal changes and technological advancements. He pointed out that the internet and social media have created a “culture of comparison,” leading to unrealistic expectations about parenting and children’s achievements. This, he said, has contributed to feelings of exhaustion and burnout among families.
Murthy called for a societal shift in recognizing the value of parenting and suggested that communities should offer more support. This could include better access to affordable childcare, mental health resources, and programs that help parents manage their responsibilities. By addressing these issues, Murthy hopes to alleviate some of the pressures on parents and improve their overall well-being.
