Free tests are back.
Starting today, the U.S. government is providing another opportunity for households to obtain free COVID-19 tests. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), eligible households can order four free tests through COVIDTests.gov. These tests are designed to identify current COVID-19 variants and are valid for use until the end of the year.
Over 900 million COVID-19 tests have already been distributed to assist in early detection and treatment of the virus, which can help reduce its spread. The nasal swab kits are designed for easy use at home, and HHS reports that results are typically available within 30 minutes. These tests are accessible to both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
As the holiday season approaches, with gatherings for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas on the horizon, testing can play a crucial role in keeping gatherings safe. Dr. Mandy Cohen, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), highlighted the importance of vigilance this winter. She encouraged everyone to utilize the tools available, including vaccines, testing, and treatment options, to combat illnesses that often increase during the fall and winter months.
In addition to testing, the latest COVID-19 vaccines are now available, including updated mRNA formulations from Moderna and Pfizer, as well as a protein-based vaccine from Novavax. The mRNA vaccines target the KP.2 ‘FLiRT’ variant, which has been widespread since late spring, while the Novavax vaccine is aimed at the JN.1 variant, which remains present but is less dominant than it once was.
All vaccine options can be accessed at pharmacies nationwide. Health experts have stated that it is safe to receive both the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu shot at the same time, making it easier for individuals to stay protected during this busy season.
