Daytime fatigue affects many.
Almost 80% of Americans navigate their days in a haze that disrupts their work, emotions, and relationships, primarily due to a lack of sleep. A recent survey revealed that 54% of Americans believe they aren’t getting sufficient rest.
“Daytime sleepiness is more than a minor nuisance; it significantly hampers our ability to function optimally, affecting everything from workplace productivity to personal relationships,” stated Dr. Alexandre Abreu, a sleep specialist and spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), which conducted the survey.
The online survey, which included over 2,000 adults and was carried out in mid-May, highlighted the substantial impact of sleep deprivation. Nearly half of the respondents (47%) indicated that sleepiness hampers their productivity, making it challenging to concentrate and work effectively. Furthermore, 31% reported that their work quality suffers, with this concern being more frequently expressed by men than women.
Additionally, 34% of participants noted that their memory and mental recall are affected by sleepiness, while 16% said it impairs their reaction time while driving. Alarmingly, about 24% reported that sleepiness negatively impacts their relationships with family and friends.
“These findings clearly illustrate the extensive effects of daytime drowsiness,” Abreu commented in an AASM news release.
The AASM recommends that adults aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night. They suggest establishing a regular bedtime, creating a calming sleep environment, and consulting a doctor about any sleep issues.
“It’s essential for individuals to acknowledge the significance of quality sleep and to seek assistance if they are having persistent difficulties sleeping well,” Abreu emphasized.
