Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist, recently shared on TikTok that neglecting to brush before bed could be an overlooked factor contributing to cardiovascular disease. Gum disease, which arises from plaque and bacteria buildup due to poor oral hygiene, can trigger health problems beyond the mouth. According to Dr. Sethi, inflamed or infected gums allow harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream, leading to chronic inflammation that may damage blood vessels and contribute to hypertension.
Research supports these claims, showing that individuals with gum disease are significantly more likely to suffer from heart attacks and strokes. Experts say that going to bed without brushing allows bacteria to thrive overnight, worsening gum inflammation and increasing the chances of developing periodontal disease.
Poor oral health can also make you more vulnerable to high blood pressure, which in turn raises the risk for heart conditions. To help protect your cardiovascular health, dentists and doctors recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and keeping up with regular dental visits.
Incorporating these habits—alongside a balanced diet, physical activity, and quality sleep—can support both oral and overall well-being. As Dr. Sethi puts it, maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to support your heart health
