Winter can be harsh to your skin.
Winter’s arrival brings challenges for your skin, as the dry and cold weather can lead to issues such as dryness and the potential onset of a “winter rash.” Dr. Oyetewa Oyerinde, an assistant professor of dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine, shares insights on maintaining healthy skin during this seasonal shift. The combination of lower humidity and indoor heating tends to dry out the skin, increasing the risk of various rashes.
To address these concerns, Dr. Oyerinde suggests making adjustments to your skincare routine. If you typically use lotion, she recommends considering a thicker cream-like moisturizer. Similarly, if you are accustomed to cream-like moisturizers, switching to an ointment-type moisturizer is advised. Even during winter activities or sports in the snow, sunscreen remains crucial.
Consistency in a proper skincare regimen is emphasized as a preventive measure against winter rashes. Paying special attention to the sensitive areas around the eyes and lips, which are more susceptible to both cold weather and rubbing associated with allergies or illnesses, is essential. In case of irritation, applying petroleum jelly can create a protective moisture seal, guarding against the harsh effects of wind and cold. For dry and cracked lips, products containing hydrocortisone or petroleum jelly can be beneficial.
Individuals with pre-existing conditions like eczema or psoriasis may experience exacerbated symptoms during dry winter weather. Allergy-related flare-ups can result in hives or skin rashes, with children being particularly prone to eczema flare-ups in winter. Older adults may also face increased skin irritation due to existing dryness.
Dr. Oyerinde highlights the importance of sunscreen, especially for individuals with darker skin tones who may be more prone to developing dark spots after experiencing rashes. On a positive note, the winter season presents an opportune time for certain skin procedures. Laser procedures, such as laser hair removal, are recommended during winter when the skin is untanned and outdoor exposure is limited. Similarly, cosmetic treatments like Botox or fillers are often scheduled in winter to ensure visible results by the time summer arrives, enhancing the desired cosmetic outcomes.
