This is a proactive measure to ensure consumer safety.
Haleon, a consumer health company, has issued a voluntary recall for certain Robitussin cough syrups due to concerns of microbial contamination. The affected products, including Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult in 4oz and 8oz sizes, and Robitussin Honey CF Max NT Adult in 8oz, are subject to the recall. Consumers are advised to check lot numbers and expiration dates provided on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website to determine if their products are affected.
While the general public is considered to have a low risk of adverse effects due to contamination, individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those on immunosuppressant medications, may face more severe consequences. The recall specifically mentions the potential for serious conditions like “fungemia” and “disseminated fungal infection,” which are more likely in individuals with weakened immune systems.
Haleon has emphasized its commitment to quality and consumer safety, stating that the recall decision is made out of an abundance of caution. The company is actively implementing corrective and preventative actions to address the issue. As of now, there have been no reported cases of illness associated with the consumption of the affected cough syrups.
Dr. Joseph Lambson, Director of the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center, highlights that individuals with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of severe outcomes. Non-immunocompromised consumers, the primary user demographic, are unlikely to experience life-threatening infections, although the occurrence of an infection that may necessitate medical intervention cannot be entirely ruled out. Consumers who suspect they have consumed a contaminated product are advised to be vigilant for symptoms such as fever, chills, and fatigue, and seek prompt medical advice or contact poison control if necessary.
