A recent study reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) is significantly enhancing the traditional EEG brain scan, boosting its potential utility. The EEG, which monitors brain activity through electrodes on the scalp, has long been used to diagnose epilepsy. However, its complex wave patterns are difficult to interpret, leading many doctors to use more expensive imaging techniques like MRI or CT scans to detect early signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
AI is now being employed to identify subtle abnormalities in EEG patterns that are often missed by human observers. This advancement could help differentiate between various cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia. The study, published in Brain Communications, shows that AI can simplify complex brain wave patterns and identify specific features linked to cognitive issues more efficiently than traditional methods.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic, who analyzed EEG data from over 11,000 patients over a decade, found that AI could quickly extract meaningful patterns from the data. This capability was seen as a major improvement over conventional diagnostic approaches, which include bedside cognitive tests and brain imaging.
Although AI-enhanced EEGs are not expected to replace other diagnostic tests, they offer a more affordable and less invasive alternative. This technology could be especially beneficial in areas with limited access to high-tech medical equipment. Early detection of cognitive issues through AI-guided EEGs could improve treatment outcomes and provide a cost-effective solution for diagnosing conditions like early memory loss and dementia.
